#METOO

By Saivikrant Deshpande

Firstly, Origin of Me Too movement dates back to 2006 when Tarana Burke, an American social activist, quoted the main motto of this movement as “to promote empowerment through empathy”. This hashtag later tweeted by Alyssa Milano which encouraged a movement called “Me Too”

It is no wonder that victims of sexual abuse have a difficult time trusting others because the relationship with the perpetrator was based on manipulation, deception, lies and secrecy. One person had that control and that person’s greed was more important than the conscience, innocence and need of the one being controlled which is why Me Too movement was formed. The Me too movement in India inspired people who range from a common person to a Bollywood personality.

The Me Too movement was set in place when Tanushree Dutta accused Nana Patekar for sexual harassment in 2018 and AIB comedian Utsav Chakraborty was accused of sexual harassment by a writer and fellow comic, Following the incident, AIB founding member and CEO Tanmay Bhat also resigned on the grounds of not taking any actions against Utsav.

Sajid Khan,The Indian director came under fire after actors Saloni Chopra, Rachel White and Simran Suri along with journalist Karishma Upadhyayin shared their episodes of harassment at the hands of Khan. Actor Alok Nath was accused of sexually assaulting TV writer and director Vinta Nanda who also alleged that he harassed actor Navneet Nishan as well. After Nanda, actors Sandhya Mridul and Deepika Amin along with one more women, stepped forward with their own accounts of enduring sexual misconduct

Also, this isn’t restricted to male assaulters and female victims.

Terry Crews shared his own story where Adam Venit, a talent agent groped his genitals in public which left him in a state of trauma. A new case surfaced where the famous stand-up comedian, Aditi Mittal kissed Kaneez Surka without her consent on a public stage. This left Kaneez humiliated, shocked and completely stripped of her choice. Earlier in the 2016, Adhyayan Suman had accused his ex-girlfriend Kangana Ranaut of torturing and abusing him, when they were together.

In upcoming 2019 election, the political stigma will change according to the empathy and sympathy of a party. Being one of the largest democracies, the votes will change according to the representation of the females in both work and social life. The downside of the impact is that the work done for them is not out of social responsibility or for social welfare but to attain or maintain the political influence. If the people accused are found guilty and appropriate action is taken, India will gain international support from various NGO’s and better reputation in the global community which will ultimately help the society to contribute to the movement and also help our political leaders to clear any dirt off them, win the election and come into power.

– The movement though helped the victims to come out publicly and seek justice whether from influential names or from abusers in the next door.
– The current turn took the wholesome nature of movement into an individualistic agenda through false allegations and pseudo-feminism.
– There are long-term negative impacts where the main message of empowerment is cast aside and the greed for power and superiority is highlighted.

Sometimes the face of the accused is a popular one, it makes a story a worth a read but when a lot of times when it’s not, we tend to turn a deaf ear to such pleas and cries. This movement brings the stories of perpetrators and their victims who could be living under the same roof, who could be friends, relatives, uncles or even fathers. This movement is for victims who don’t have a face to point to but do have a face which haunts and have scars on them. When all genders are united for this movement, it’s a battle that hasn’t been lost.Urge to the masses is to maintain the sanctity of this #metoo movement and not let personal, religious or political vendettas and spurious stories dull the spark of this movement.

Lastly, the Me Too movement is a double-edged sword where there is no generalization of victims or abusers. It goes without saying that the defendant is innocent until proven guilty and it also implies that every voice should be heard in a form of a powerful message to change the system instead of individual agendas.
