BAN ON ABORTION IN ALABAMA

On May 14, 2019, a bill that could effectively ban abortion was passed through the Alabama Senate by 25 Republicans. It was also finally signed by the Governor of Alabama Kay Ellen Ivey. It is considered to be the most restrictive abortion bill in the state. This bill has been widely criticized by the whole world. According to the bill, abortion in cases of rape and incest is also illegal and medical practitioners involved in continuing the procedure can be sentenced to imprisonment for life. It is clearly unfair on the part of the women of the nation. No one has the privilege of taking a decision on behalf of the women about what to do with their own bodies. Celebrities like Ava DuVernay, Reese Witherspoon, Jameela Jamil, John Legend, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Chris Evans, Dua Lipa, Ellen DeGeneres, Chaz Bono, and many others have expressed their concerns about the issue and had openly criticized it. The judgment in the famous case of “Roe v. Wade” is in danger. In this case, it was held by the U.S. Supreme Court that according to the “Due Process Clause” of the fourteenth amendment of the U.S. Constitution a pregnant woman is given the right to decide if she wants an abortion or not. This was considered to be a part of the “right to privacy”.
The abortion bill is absolutely erroneous. This will lead to the birth of many unwanted births in the state. In 1966, Romanian leader, Nicolae Ceausescu also barred abortion and other contraceptives in order to boost the population. Soon, birth rates increase from 1.9 to 3.7. but the old scenario came back again and birth-rates fell. Women found ways to abort, which were in most cases illegal. Rich and wealthy women used to bribe doctors and many started using IUDs smuggled from Germany. Thus, the decision taken by the Alabama government might also lead to an increase in criminal and other illegal activities. In many families, children are neglected due to various reasons. The unwanted children will give a raise to this. Staying in the orphanages often cause certain disturbances in the child’s mind. Thus, this ban on abortion bill will cause many troubles all over the state. Reproductive choices allow woman empowerment because they are given control of their own bodies. The choice of when and whether to have a child is completely based on the woman and the partner. It is a right and not a privilege. That right cannot be taken away from them. It was also studied that fetuses feel no pain during most cases of abortion. Also, it had been considered that personhood starts when the fetus is able to survive outside the womb and not at the time of conception (in India an abortion is legal when done until the twentieth week of the pregnancies. After the twentieth week it depends on the circumstances.). Access to professional abortion techniques reduces maternal injury and deaths caused by complicated pregnancies. Denied abortions also lead to an increase in mental instabilities in women .
Thus, all the above mentioned points have clearly proven that the ban on abortion in Alabama is not legitimate at all. It had been estimated that approximately 39% of women in the U.S. live in countries that do not provide sufficient abortion facilities.
The decision taken by the 25 men Republicans shows how even in the 21st century, women do not get to take a decision for themselves on their own. This ban is a shameful stunt shown by Alabama government. Another legitimate question that has been asked by the whole state and also by the people of the world is if men should have a say in the debate, apparently till date all the abortion rules had been taken by men. Social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook along with internet forums like Reddit are already flooded with arguments of both sides: “No- Only women get pregnant, so why should be men given the chance to decide. Yes- These laws affect everyone, including men”. I believe that no woman can be free unless she has the right to take the decisions related to her own health and reproductive issues on her own. A 2018 “Pew Research Centre Study” says that almost 60% of women want abortion to be legalized in all cases along with the support of 57% men. Also, it was studied that around 8 out of 10 people in America support abortion and want it to be legalized. Mr. Donald Trump said he was against abortion with the exception of in instances of assault, incest or a "genuine well-being hazard" to the mother. In general, access to abortion in the cases the president recorded stays well known with Americans—as indicated by a 2018 Gallup survey, rape and incest exemptions are broadly upheld by the American public, with 77 percent of Americans wanting abortion ought to be legitimate in the primary (first) trimester in those cases. US perspectives on abortion were observed to be like those in India and Turkey; 46 percent of Americans said they trust abortion is inadmissible, contrasted with 38 percent who said they think that it is adequate. Respondents in India and Turkey said they contradict abortion at 48 and 47 percent, separately. In Great Britain, 17 percent of respondents said they trust fetus removal is inadmissible; in Sweden and Denmark, just 10 percent of individuals were against the method. Thus, people first need to know every bit of detail related to abortion.
I conclude with the thought that this complete ban on abortion in all cases should be banned as soon as possible in order to stop a catastrophe.
