Factors Preventing India from Becoming a Developed Nation

Factors Preventing India from Becoming a Developed Nation

By Ankita Das

Britishers ruled and plundered India for more than 200 years. When they left India was left with nothing. India had to start from the beginning.[1] India received its independence from the British rule on August 15, 1947. The people of India had to fight in order to make India free from the British colonial rule.[2] These points justify the question that why India is still a developing country. It has been seventy years since all this happened which is quite a long time to construct the gap between developing to developed.

A developing country is a nation that fares poorly on the HDI and has low levels of industrialization. HDI stands for Human Development Index. A developing country is less developed than a developed country. We also refer to developed countries as advanced economies.[3] Actual satisfaction of people is also taken into account to categorize nations as a developed and developing country. India is listed among one of the fastest developing counties in the world. But the pace of the development is not as good when compared with the other countries of the world that are already developed and are much exceptional than India. There are many reasons why India lack in the development criteria.[4] It is not that people do not realise that India has a slow pace of development but they do not focus on what to be done in order to make it a developed country. There are numerous issues in our country that are preventing it from becoming a developed nation.

1.     GROWTH OF POPULATION

India ranks second in the population criteria. There are innumerable things to be taken into consideration because of the population issues. A country which is highly populated will definitely face a low pace of development. There will be a lot of necessity for the resources to be distributed among the citizens of the country. The major fact is that enough resources should be available for the people in order to meet their needs. The population of our country should be brought in proper control in order to make our country one of the developed countries. Population is the first reason why India is still a country that is not developed. In this case because of the drastic increase in the population the resources are not shared properly. There is a quote said by Jawaharlal Nehru "India is rich but Indians are Poor".[5] The sole reason for this is that the resources are not distributed properly among the people. There has to be some good solution for this condition. Few people are also irresponsible and this is the one of the many reasons on why there is a great increase in the population of the country.

2.     ABSENCE OF UNITY AMONG PEOPLE

Unity is the strength of any nation. The people will get the great strength to tackle any kind of problem that is approaching them only if they are united. This is the reason why people focus on the unity part of it. In case of India we can very well say that there is no unity among the people. This is the reason why the Britishers held us as slaves for so many years. People think that it is not necessary to interfere in the matters of the country and this made the Britishers seat comfortably in India. The people of our country are also divided among them due to a great thing called language. The people of the country speak different languages which eventually creates a barrier in communicating with each other. Slowly and gradually in the coming years if the chances for creating unity among the people is increased there will be a very fast development in our country.

3.     POLITICAL ISSUES

Politics is a huge issue in any country. There should be a legislature and there should be a standard to administer the general population and direct them to the correct path. It is very important that people should be given proper rules and it should be seen that they follow that. The rules given to the people of India will create disciplines among them. All the political leaders are not bona fide and work for the welfare of the people. The political leaders tell a lot of things during the election to develop the nation just to seek votes. Due to lack of responsibility on the part of the political leaders the country is not yet developed. The main motive of the political leaders is to earn money when they are in the political fields. People know many corrupted political leaders who are in higher position but they do not have the potential to tell about them to the authorities and question them directly. If India has to be made a developed nation it is very important to bring a severe change in the political scenario of the country. Direct actions should be taken on the corrupted political leaders. They should be removed from their seat and other necessary actions should be taken against them. Educated and experienced people should be sent to those seats who will rule the country and make decisions in the good faith of the citizens.

4.     CORRUPTION A PRIMARY ISSUE

Corruption has now become an emerging issue in our country. Almost every sector in India is affected by corruption especially infrastructure and real estate, metal and mining, aerospace and defence and power and utilities.[6] There are many people who are performing corruption. The condition of India is so bad that in some cases our work is not done unless we give bribe. No initiative is taken to remove the problem of corruption in our country. There are anti-corruption forces functioning all over India but in spite of that corruption is taking place. The Indian people are affected to a greater extent due to corruption. The good people are also affected because of the one who is performing corruption. In some cases, the innocent people are also forced to get bribe and get their job finished. Due to corruption foreign investors show less interest in dealing with India. Corruption leads to inefficiency and does not lead to development of a healthy market. Corruption has now become a big hurdle in the growth of the country. Some stringent rules should be issued in our county to eradicate the corruption.

5.     INDIVIDUALS BEING IN BELOW POVERTY LINE

The rich get richer and the poor gets poorer.[7] There are a certain section of people in our society who are below poverty line. They are not given any importance. According to me the government should take some good initiative to build the gap between the people who are below poverty line and the people who are above poverty There are still many families in the India who are not having proper living for their one-time food in a day. Whenever a good thing is given for the reach of the people below poverty line those things are taken away by the people who are dealing in the middle. Government is now providing all the free facilities for the people to bring them above the poverty line.

6.     ILLITERACY ANOTHER SERIOUS PROBLEM

For economic development India must put more emphasis on education, health and industrial sector. Many researchers have found out relationship between education and development.  Theodore Schultz has found out that productivity of literate farmers is more than illiterate farmers in the developing countries. Mohammed Tamim, reached to the conclusion that with by improving the level of education, an improvement in the level of development can be seen.[8] India is very poor in the education criteria. When compared to education on the various states in India Kerala ranks state in the literacy and the saddest thing is that Bihar another state in India is very poor in the poverty criteria. There are also many other reasons why the Illiteracy rates are high in India. The individuals who are below poverty line doesn't know the value of the education. They send their children to work for the daily wages. The people are easily cheated by the other people. It is very important for the people of our country to know the value of the education because it will make them self-dependent and set an example for the future generations. When we focus on the development criteria of our nation first, we should focus on the educational point of view. When a person is educated then it can he will gain experience in what is wrong and what is right. The Government of India provided many educational programs to make the people literate. If the people are literate then there will be no problem in anything. India will soon become a developed nation.

7.     DIVIDE AND RULE POLICY

The divide and rule policy were made by the British individuals. To tell about the general population of India, they are as of now separated because of the languages. There are individuals who talk distinctive dialects in various part of our nation. At that point when the divide and rule policy came into existence the unity was broken. At the point when the solidarity of a nation is broken the turmoil happens effectively inside the nation itself. Individuals additionally battle among themselves. This was the great plan made by the British people and this is the reason the divide and rule policy were implemented and this acted as the basement for restricting the development of our country to a greater extent.[9]

8.     BRAIN DRAIN

This is another primary issue that makes India still a developing country and the people of India use all the resources from the country to gain lots of knowledge and then finally settle in the foreign countries. This helps in the development of that particular country and it is a major drawback for our country. Brain drain are done by those who thinks that their countries are much more developed. We can also tell that the point of view of the people who settle in the other country and work for the other country is right because, if a person has developed himself in India, he is not provided with great opportunity to develop himself in India.[10] The reason for the brain drain are mainly related to political issues and can also be related to other issues. This is a genuine problem in India and this is the reason why a person chose to go to foreign country for the growth of his carrier. Brain drain is now developing to a greater extent. Individuals are given great importance in the other countries. There is also a thought that the Indian brains are the most robust brains in the world. The reason for the restriction in the development of our country is that the Indian brains are not given proper recognition or the Indian brains are not used properly by the proper person at the proper time.[11]

9.     CASTE BASED RESERVATION

Caste based reservation is still a very sensitive issue in India and taken up frequently to fetch votes. This is one of the reasons why our nation is not moving forward at a pace on which it should be to become a developed country. If we want to keep the caste-based reservation system then a limit must be defined for the same. Any family should allow to use the quote just once. This means once a person in a family has used the quote then no one else can use it. Caste based reservation was put into practice to benefit under privileged. So, once they are out of poverty then they can help the rest of the family. On the other hand, government can provide the required financial support to educate them.[12]

10.  IMPLEMENTATION OF LAW WITH STRICTNESS

There is probably no law in India that has been implemented with strictness. So, law makers must think on the firm implementation and good governance.

The critical challenges India faces today can only be defeated through communication and cooperative initiatives between the people of India and the current political administration. Once both parties recognize that these critical problems of population, water and sanitation, and illiteracy rates, corruption, lack of unity, unhealthy politics need to be addressed, only then can India truly begin to successfully develop. If these issues go unaddressed, India might encounter severe consequences that can result in potential and permanent damage to India’s chance of becoming a developed nation.[13]
